Battery energy storage systems enable energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, to be stored and then released when the power is needed most.
About us
FuturEnergy Ireland is a joint venture company owned on a 50:50 basis by Coillte and ESB that launched in November 2021. By combining the assets and expertise of these two leading commercial semi-state companies, FuturEnergy Ireland is strongly positioned to tackle climate change and improve energy security on behalf of the people of Ireland.
Our ambition is to develop more than 1GW of renewable energy capacity and a supporting network of energy storage systems by 2030. In doing so, FuturEnergy Ireland will make a significant contribution to Ireland’s commitment to produce 80% of electricity from renewable sources by the end of the decade.

Timeline
The task of designing and developing a battery storage project can take between four and nine months before a planning application is submitted. If this timeline changes, we will keep the community informed through letter-drops and on this website.

Summer 2026
- The Lettermore community engagement manager calls to houses adjacent to the proposed site to introduce the project and deliver Newsletter 1.
- Newsletter 1 distributed to local political representatives.
- The website www.lettermoreenergystorage.ie launches, which includes all project information and FAQs.
Summer/ Autumn 2026
- Newsletter 2 delivered to local homes and political representatives with updates, including project timeline, community benefit fund details, a site map and visuals.
- Community engagement manager calls to local homes.
Winter 2026
- Advance notice given to the local community of the planning application.
- Planning application submitted to Donegal County Council.
- Planning application documents uploaded to www.lettermoreenergystorage.ie
